As a Meta University Product Design Intern on the Company Account Access (CAA) Acquisition Growth team within the Cross-Meta Experiences Org, I had the opportunity to explore the Facebook and Instagram registration flow. I worked on projects ranging from leading the re-design of the password screen to improve user education and help low-digital-literacy users create stronger passwords, to optimizing the save password interstitial screen. I went through the entire design process, from synthesizing UX Research, competitive analysis and audits, to creating high-fidelity prototypes. The best part of my summer was learning from and collaborating with inspiring and talented Metamates, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and growing as a person and well-rounded designer!

Internship Highlights
  • Proactively collaborated on a cross-functional team, as I got to work with amazing product designers, content designers, engineers, data scientists, and product managers.
  • Designed high-fidelity prototypes both in iOS and Android; before Meta I had only designed in iOS.
  • Learned how to prototype in Origami.
  • Considered privacy, legality and accessibility in my final proposal.
  • Presented in weekly Cross-Meta design critiques with 12 designers and implemented feedback.
  • Prioritized design principles and documented all design considerations.
Key Takeaways
  • Be Open-minded — feedback is a gift
It is important to receive feedback from unique perspectives early and often. Do not be afraid to get opinions from others, as diverse points-of-views will only make your designs stronger.
  • Be Communicative — cross-functional team collaboration is key
Collaborating with other product designers, researchers, engineers, product managers, content designers, and data scientists is crucial to understanding all aspects of the product lifecycle.
  • Be Patient — the process is circular, not linear
You will be continuously going back and revisiting design steps as you become aware of new insights, and that is okay! It is important to go slow and take your time through each stage of the design process.
  • Be Curious — understand the why
Having a deeper understanding of the user research and people problem allows the final design to be that much more successful at solving the deeper problem at hand. Remember, you are not the user.
  • Product Design is definitely for me
I am excited to continue exploring and growing as a product designer, as I have found my passion for user-centered design.

Unfortunately, I cannot go into detail about the work I did at Meta, as it is under NDA. If you would like to learn more, feel free to contact me at arp246@cornell.edu!
